Orbital maneuvering system thruster tests are currently underway, as are leak checks of the shuttle main engines' hot gas system. Weekend work, which has been scheduled in anticipation of roll over, includes structural leak checks of the orbiter and payload bay door closeout activities. The flight readiness review for the STS-39 Discovery mission is tentatively set for Feb. 14 and 15. This date is predicated on the actual roll-over date and may change. Work on Atlantis also continues on schedule. Currently underway are window replacement activities, orbiter nose cap installation, and main engine securing operations. The main engines will undergo a flight readiness test over the weekend. The Atlantis STS-37 stack is under assembly in the Vehicle Assembly Building. Presently, technicians are beginning close-out activities on the field joint assemblies on the two solid rocket booster stacks. Assembly work on the right-hand stack is incomplete. The forward segment and frustum will be attached to the stack next week. Atlantis' STS-37 flight, to deploy the Gamma Ray Observatory, is presently scheduled for launch in April. Columbia will be moved from the VAB to Discovery's position in the Orbiter Processing Facility once Discovery is rolled to the VAB. Meanwhile, post-flight inspections of Columbia's main engines continues in the VAB main engine shop. Thermal protection currently is being installed in the area of Columbia's landing gear doors. Columbia's next mission will be the STS-40 Space Life Sciences mission using a Spacelab habitable module. That mission is set for launch in May. The Office of Space Flight expects to issue a new flight manifest in conjunction with the President's budget message to Congress. The new manifest should be available sometime during the first week of February. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Galileo is now about 22.7 million miles from Earth. Its speed, in solar orbit, is 82,880 mph. The spacecraft has flown nearly 736 million miles since it was launched last October, and has an 1.6 billion miles to go before reaching Jupiter in December 1995. Spacecraft health and mission performance continue to be excellent. Galileo is in its all-spin mode, rotating at about 3 rpm. Its sensors are also routinely collecting data on interplanetary dust and magnetic fields. Next Thursday, Jan. 31, Galileo will begin using its primary low- gain antenna for communications with Earth. The current configuration uses the secondary low-gain antenna, located on the spacecraft's shady side. The switch will be necessary because Galileo will cross Earth's orbit in three weeks. At that time, the spacecraft-Earth geometry will require using the primary antenna, located on Galileo's sunward side. Here's the broadcast schedule for Public Affairs events on NASA Select TV.
